It's not a magazine they have to open.

Most local advertising hides inside something else: a coupon book, a magazine, a website nobody visits. This card is the mail. It comes out of the mailbox face up, and every business on it is seen at the same moment.

A few businesses split the printing and postage, which is why a slot costs a fraction of what mailing 5,000 homes on your own would run.
